Professional Judgement
If a student’s income has significantly changed impacting their ability to pay for college (for example: Job loss or layoff due to COVID, etc.) the Financial Aid Coordinator may exercise Professional Judgment by performing a needs analysis to account for extenuating circumstances not addressed in the original FAFSA®. For more information about Professional Judgments, please see the Financial Aid Coordinator.
So what IS Professional Judgement?
When a student applies for a Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA), some students do not qualify because they made too much money to qualify for a Pell Grant. FAFSA pulls information from 2 years prior, so if that student has had a job change and their income is significantly less than it was on the tax forms used for their FAFSA, the Financial Aid Coordinator can perform what is called a “Professional Judgement”. A Professional Judgment is a process Financial Aid offices perform that provides the ability to make adjustments to information provided by students in their Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) applications. Professional Judgements are reserved for Special Circumstances that affect the student’s financial situation (such as a job loss/layoff), and for Unusual circumstances that affect the student’s dependency status (such as parental abandonment, etc.). Pacific Bible College’s Financial Aid Coordinator is authorized to perform Professional Judgements for students. If you are in a situation that affects your financial situation or dependency status, please contact the Financial Aid Coordinator.
